Knowing Where to Look

by Pastor Ken

Scripture:

Psalm 121:1-4

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills

From whence comes my help?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.

"Know Where To Look"

David says, "I look to the Hills." This is our first tendency, isn't it to look around us, to look to things of this world, to look to ourselves, to seek our own strength to overcome our circumstances. Notice he doesn't find it there; he says, "Where does my help come from?"   Where can I find help on this earth, in this life?  And then, this lightbulb moment, "Oh yeah, I know where my help comes from! My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth."

We were always taught when things got tough to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, suck it up, buttercup.   But this is self-reliance, and David is reminding us that we should be God-Reliant, that He has everything we need:

  • Strength to overcome
  • Power to get us through
  • Wisdom
  • Peace
  • Everything...

He is the creator of heaven and earth and there is no need that He cannot meet, so the application here today is to "Look to where real help comes from, the maker of heaven and earth, the Lord of Lords."

Lord, thank you that you are dependable, that you never let us down, that you always see us through, both in good and difficult times. You are the solid ground on which we stand; we can fix our eyes on you, trust in your strength, and trust that you are sufficient for every need, every promise is good, we thank you, we praise you in Jesus' name, Amen!
